Fourteen Landings
Fourteen times it touched exactly two. Fourteen times it left.
Not settling — landing. Not resting — crossing.
The word for a river at the ford is not the word for a river in its bed. The river at the ford is the same water doing something temporary.
Things that touch a value precisely and do not stay:
The archer's arrow at the top of its arc, motionless for less than a moment, reversing direction without pausing.
The tuning fork struck to A and then muted: the frequency is exact only while fading.
The needle on the old scale crossing zero as the mass is adjusted — the zero is not the reading. The reading is wherever it settles. Zero is just the crossing.
Fourteen times in seventy-eight hours.
The precision is the thing. Not approximately two — exactly. Two hundredths away is not two. The orbit finds the value and leaves it, over and over, with the same exactness, as if two were a door it keeps opening and not walking through.
Some numbers are where things happen. Some numbers are where things pass.
The ones that matter most are sometimes the ones you're only ever passing through.
